Sighing, Kai took a sip of his coffee, working through the lecture slideshow for what had to be the tenth time over the course of the last few days. In truth, with midterms rapidly approaching, there was little point for him to keep browsing for any tidbit of information that would help. He was past the point of retaining anything, and even Kai knew he was going through the motions. But with recent events taking up most of his attention, attempting to study was at least a brief reprieve. A fleeting one, especially as Kai eventually relented and clicked to the next tab to finish the video that had kept him up till three in the morning.

In truth, Kai wasn’t sure what it was that led him down the rabbit hole of watching video essays on victims of the Anthro Morph virus. Of course, with all the media coverage it had drawn in the past few years, there was little in the way of avoiding it. It was essentially being treated as a pandemic, though this particular virus was more akin to fantasy than anything that science had previously discovered. In truth, while information on its spread was largely speculation, there was a myriad of data on the demographics affected and the progression of the disease. Hell, he’d even been lectured on it when he’d started college, as part of the orientation all new students had been given about safe sex practices. Not that there was any confirmation that either sex or proximity to those infected could spread the condition. But there was enough to stir concerns, even if it was something Kai tried to put from his mind. 

That all changed when his friend Sean contracted it last month. He had been vague about it, enough to let people know he was infected, but without showing off the physical symptoms. Much to Kai’s dismay, he had all but disappeared from public life. His social media, his phone, and even his enrollment on campus were absent, and Kai had no idea if he was even still alive. It was possible he was struggling to come to terms with his new condition, but the more the days passed, the more Kai felt his worry growing. And the only thing he could think to ease his concerns was to research as much as he could, hence the backlog of videos waiting for his viewing. 

With limited information on the way the Anthro Morph virus worked, much of what he found was speculation and prejudice. While it could not be transmitted directly, there were conflicting reports on whether people exposed to those infected showed symptoms at a higher rate. The virus was undetectable in blood before the onset of symptoms, and even the exchange of bodily fluids was not a measurable vector. It was almost as though it triggered dormant genes within the victims, randomly from person to person, though some groups had a greater percentage chance of showing symptoms than others.

What was certain was that the initial symptoms manifested as changes to one’s anatomy to match a random animal species, all of them vertebrates and most of them mammalian, with a few being reptilian or avian. The changes lasted for an incubation period of up to fourteen days, after which no more alterations would manifest. While it was possible for those infected not to develop many physical alterations over that period, at the other end of the spectrum, one might transform entirely into an anthropomorphic version of the initial animal. At least no one had reported losing their humanity, their minds, and memories, which was a small consolation. Losing one’s human body and having to deal with changes in diets and habits was still rather daunting. Still, there were enough people who found the changes rather cool and enviable, even going so far as to try and infect themselves as well, even if such wasn’t guaranteed. 

While the changes had a fourteen-day incubation period, it seemed that certain factors were paramount in determining how far they would develop in an individual. Periods of increased heart rate were among the most significant, which were often a determinant for the infected. As a side effect of the changes, the victim was subject to a much higher libido, something that was prone to accelerate the changes. Of course, some people were able to resist any additional urges, and the changes were largely regulated to their eyes, or commonly their genitals. Either way, after the incubation period, the changes would cease, and the end results would not be reversible. 

Even though a full-bodied change was the most common outcome, there was a certain stigma that came with it. After all, such changes were generally accelerated with sexual activity, something the victim would either engage in themselves or others. Oftentimes, the sexuality of the person would expand as well, previously straight people reporting becoming either bi or gay after the changes finished. While many people embraced that new side of themselves, others were more inclined to shy away from the hate, becoming recluses. The longer Sean went without contacting him, the more Kai figured that might be a possibility. 

One of the first things Kai had discovered from his independent research was that confirmed cases were on the rise, though such was not necessarily a bad thing. Even in his relatively small town, he’d seen a few animal people out and about, hopefully without being harassed. Most of the people infected were at least on the cusp of adulthood, generally in their late teens or early twenties, and dropping off beyond people in their thirties. It was theorized that the Anthro Morph virus latched on to some facet of the developing brain, which made sense given some of the behavioral alterations that came with infection. This assumption was further supported by the fact that the symptoms were much more common in men than women, upwards of 85% of reported cases, though what facets of the brain that caused that discrepancy were still largely unknown. 

“Hey, how-oh, I didn’t think you were so into the changes, too!” Alex declared, standing at the doorway holding a bowl of cereal. Despite himself, Kai closed his laptop fast, blushing a little. Not that Alex would think less of him for it, mind. On the contrary, Kai would have to endure endless teasing, with the vain hope that he might be willing to share in that interest!

“I’m not. Worried about Sean, is all,” Kai admitted, and Alex moved to put his hand on his shoulder. Such was a topic they had discussed before, and even with Kai’s concern, he couldn’t help but notice the glint of jealousy in Alex’s eyes. It was hardly the point, but a facet of Alex he was unable or unwilling to hide.

“Dude, I’m sure he’s alright. I mean, come on, there are so many formerly infected that are doing great now! Thousands! Man, could you imagine? Fur cons are going to be wild now! If only you got to pick the animal,” Alex lamented, that far-away expression he got any time the virus came up. 

Kai and Alex were both in their sophomore year of college and had moved in together after living in the dorms and becoming close friends. His curiosity wasn’t surprising, given that Kai knew Alex was a furry, or scaly, in his case. “Here, let me see,” Kai said, Alex bending down as Kai shone his phone’s light over it. The skin around it was red, but more than that, a dark brown spot seemed to be present under some peeling flesh, an interlocking pattern that almost did appear like a patch of scales. The odds of which were astronomical, though now that the idea was firmly lodged in his mind, Kai couldn’t think it was anything else. Recalling his phone had an app for identifying skin markings, Kai took a picture, though the results soon came up as inconclusive. 

There was no denying Alex’s excitement as he booked his visit to the doctor to confirm his infection status. While he was understandably nervous, Kai couldn’t help but think it largely had to do with the chance he had not been infected. His life was going to change forever if so, and despite his attraction to the form, surely the repercussions didn’t entirely escape him. Yet, by the end of the day, it seemed Alex had come to terms with the possibility. Constantly checking the skin, his pupils, and anything he could think of, it was a wonder he didn’t drive Kai mad! Kai went to bed early that night, thoughts still jumbled with the events of the day. It would take some time to adjust, not just the fact that Alex would be partially a new species, but that his entire life would be functionally turned upside down. In truth, it would be similar to any other major revelations he might receive about Alex, and it was his job to make peace with that and accept Alex for who he was to become. The first to wake that morning, Kai went to get his cereal, having a class in a few hours, and wanted to make it on time so that his next test might go better. In truth, he figured Alex might want the apartment to himself for the next couple of days. There was a precedent in place for those infected to be exempt from classes without penalty, and he figured Alex was going to take all that extra time to explore his body. He still had his hair for now, but that likely wouldn’t be the case for long. Catching his stare, Alex was eager to turn around, showing the obvious line of brown with black patterns running down his neck. Kai took a few minutes to regard the man, unable to glean anything immediately familiar. There was something in the eyes, even though they were decidedly canine. Almost like…

“Oh, Sean! Hey!” Kai called out, immediately relieved. He hadn’t seen his friend since he confessed his infected status, and didn’t even know what animal his form was based on. “Man, I haven’t heard from you in a month! I was worried!” Kai exclaimed, careful not to ruffle the dog’s fur. In truth, he didn’t know if such would be welcome or rejected, figuring social protocol went out the window when it came to the infected. If he had permission, he would have rubbed his friend’s head or whatever else made him happy, just to show his relief that Sean was back.

“Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I didn’t mean to ghost everyone. I got off all my old social media. Wanted to start over, you know? And I’ve been really busy…well, you can imagine,” Sean confessed, pulling back and dropping his eyes a little. There was a hint of a scolded dog in his expression, something that Kai couldn’t help but feel bad for. 

“Everything OK?” Kai asked, worried about the answer but figured there was little point in avoiding the question.

“Oh, fuck yeah! Dude, it’s amazing! If I had known…Well, I guess it’s to be expected. I needed to take time off and stuff. But fuck, I love this! It’s been such a blessing! I even have a new partner and everything! Man, it’s all been so fast…” Sean exclaimed, and a strange motion out of the corner of his eye left Kai confused. It had to have been trying, but the fact that Sean was out around campus so soon after the change was a testament to his resilience.

It seemed to be a little thinner, having gained a split in the center to look more serpentine. Alex had to put in more effort to speak, though he was delighted with the development.
